From Junior Sail

NCYC member will be sailing in Chubb Champs

Congratulations to NCYC Junior member Ian Riemal for qualifying in 1st place for the Chubb National Championship regatta.  Here is an interview done by our Pubilicity Team...

Newer NCYC member Ian Reimel is preparing for this year’s Chubb regatta with his crew, Zoe Hoctor of Hoover Sailing Club. They will be competing in a 420 against 19 other pairs for the prestigious F. Gregg Bemis Trophy.

Ian, who will soon begin his senior year in high school, grew up sailing with his parents who own an S2 7.9 and belong to West Shore Sail Club. He says the 4-5 years he spent Opti sailing is where he began to understand the finer points of boat performance. Ian loves sailing in general, but in competition he deeply loves the inherent challenges of making a sailboat go as fast as possible.

Ian and Zoe qualified for the Chubb US Junior Championships at the Area E qualifier in Rochester, NY with a strong first-place finish in a fleet of 21 boats. (Note: NCYC members Matthew Mrocca and Gretchen Siek placed 3rd.)

Ian is proud to be a member of North Cape. Through junior sailing he was a friend of many of our junior members before joining our club. He finds everyone from NCYC to be extremely nice and helpful, and he can rely on members for necessary boat parts and advice. He, too, is willing to share his advice. Ian also commented that he enjoys our homey atmosphere.

When asked if competing for the Bemis Trophy in last year’s Chubb US Junior Championships at Toms River, NJ gives him foresight into this year’s regatta, Ian stated, “Oh yes! I was overwhelmed by the level of expertise among the competitors and I got schooled. They’re great sailors.” Well, Ian, we think you’re a great sailor, too, and NCYC wishes you the best during this regatta.
